Lately, I've been getting more requests to make plushies for babies so I figured I'd share some tips for this! This will help to ensure your plushie is as safe as possible for babies 2 and younger :).
Pattern featured in photos is the bear and duck mod from my 6-in-1 Chonky Plushie Pattern, available in my shops.
Use tight stitches to ensure a tight fabric that keeps the stuffing hidden from tiny, curious fingers; Yarn under method works best. Size down 1 to 3 hook sizes from yarn manufacturer’s label recommendation - For example, I used a 4.5mm hook for my plushies pictured when the recommended hook size on the label was 6.5mm
Use baby-safe yarn; Choose a soft, durable, and hypoallergenic yarn that is OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified - The majority of the time, if the yarn is label as "baby yarn," it falls under this certification. For example, I used Big Twist Baby Bear for my bear plushie and Bernat Baby Blanket for the duck plushie.
Embroider ALL facial features using embroidery floss or worsted-weight yarn (never use safety eyes/noses, buttons, nor glued-on felt).
Stuff the plushie firmly and evenly so that it retains its shape; high-quality, 100% polyester stuffing, which is hypo-allergenic and machine washable.
Secure any attachments (legs, arms, ears, etc.; if applicable) by sewing around the connection point at least three separate times to ensure they do not detach; hid loose strands deep inside the plushie.
