one stop shop for all things crochet!
Welcome to Jarful of Knots! I’m Chung, the designer and maker here. The name "Jarful of Knots" is a nod to two of my favorite creative things: the art of crochet and the rustic charm of crafting with mason jars. I learned to crochet in my Arts & Crafts elective in high school and it is been an on/off hobby of over the years. However, since opening Jarful Of Knots over 5 years ago, this crochet “hobby” of mine has turned into a full-blown job and it’s been “on” ever since!
Thoughtfully Designed Crochet Patterns, Display Tags, and More!
We’ve all been there—the half-finished Afghan or the sweater that’s been in a bin for months. While I admire those massive projects, my mission is different. I design quality patterns that provide instant gratification; most can be finished in just a day or two! To keep things exciting, I enjoy working with unconventional techniques and a huge variety of textures, from classic acrylic to trendy t-shirt and chenille yarns. I also include yarn substitutions in my patterns so you can create with whatever is in your stash.
A Family Affair
Jarful of Knots is truly a team effort. While I handle the designs and handmade items, my husband, Tom, manages the tech and illustrates our signature "punny" characters. Even our two sons jump in to help with market prep and "photo shoots!"
Working “Heart & Soul” Towards an American Dream
Finally, being part of a first generation immigrant Hmong family, I cannot forget the sacrifices my parents made to get us to America. After my father helped fight with the Americans in the Vietnam war, they were left with no choice (after the war) but to escape the communist regime in Laos or face persecution. They eventually found their way to a refugee camp in Thailand. There, they waited 3 long years before they were sponsored by a Christian church in Massachusetts to come to America, in which, thanks to God, we already had family waiting for us. My family arrived to this country with little to no knowledge of the language, culture, and education BUT they had faith in God (Ephesians 2:4-5).
Growing up, I watched my parents work hard in low-paying, labor-intensive jobs to feed our family of 8. With help and support from our Christian church families and government assistance, we were able to get through those early years. Eventually, my parents worked their way to where we no longer depended on additional assistance and they were even able to purchase their own home. Our parents demonstrated to us how to appreciate and respect the help we receive from others.
Today, my parents example of working 'heart and soul' serves as the blueprint for my business. While I never envisioned myself as an small business owner, I recognize that this path was paved by their sacrifices and guided by God’s perfect timing (Ecclesiastes 3:11). This unexpected journey has given me a new appreciation for our nation’s founding principles and the beauty of the American Dream. I am truly blessed to have this opportunity to share my joy of crocheting/crafting through my small business and I am thankful to God, every day. (Philippians 4:13).
