scalloped tray pattern & video tutorial
I really like the scalloped finish on crochet projects so I decided to use it in this tray pattern. My Small Scalloped Tray pattern requires a double strand (2 strands of yarn held together) to ensure it works up thick and quickly. This pattern uses a combination of half double crochet (HDC), wide half double crochet (WHDC), and slip stitches (SL ST). If you are fairly new to crocheting and have never worked a WHDC, do not let it intimidate you. If you know how to work a HDC, a WHDC will come just as easy! The WHDC is used to work the base because it provides a dense finish.
The finished dimensions of this tray comes out to around 5.25” to 5.75” diameter depending on the actual thickness of yarn used; so it is perfect for your trinkets, keys, or Knick Knacks. I provide a gauge below, but it’s not important unless you are highly invested in getting an exact diameter. I hope you’ll give it a try and please tag me @jarfulofknots on socials or comment below! The free version of this pattern is provided below along with a quick 2-minute tutorial. Please note that the video tutorial is a quick overview only.
If preferred, the full, digital PDF pattern is available in my shops (linked below) which includes step by step instructions, photos, and yarn options.

This pattern is worked using a double strand of yarn (2 strands of yarn held together).
Tip: To get 2 strands of yarn from 1 skein, combine both the center strand and outer strand.
This pattern is worked beginning with the base. The side is crocheted into the finished base.
At the end of each round, work a SL ST into the first ST to join round.
Starting from round 2 on, the beginning of each round is worked with either a CH1 or CH2 and the first ST in worked in same ST as CH1 or CH2.
The CH1 or CH2 at beginning of each round does not count as a ST unless noted.
A comma (,) indicates to work in the next ST.
A "x#" indicates to work the indicated ST in each of the next “x” number of stitches; For example: SC x4 = Work 1 single crochet in each of the next 5 stitches.
