Finished Dimensions
6.5" wide x 3.5" long x 1.5" depth (not including beak/wattle)
Basket will fit standard sized eyeglasses, sunglasses or crochet hooks.
Supplies
(Affiliate links included):
22 yards of any Bernat Blanket, super bulky #6 yarn (or similiar)
Any super bulky weight #6 yarn may also be used, however, yardage may differ.
Small amount of worsted medium weight #4 yarn in orange, red, and black
Abbreviations:
BLO = Back Loop Only
CH = Chain
DC = Double Crochet
FLO = Front Loop Only
FO = Fast off
HDC = Half double crochet
Rnd = Round
SC = Single Crochet
SCINC = Single Crochet Increase
SK = Skip
SL ST = Slip Stitch
ST = Stitch
Pattern notes (Please read before beginning pattern)
A 6.5mm hook is used to work the basket, a 4.5mm hook is used to work the wattle and beak.
This basket is worked beginning with the base of basket up to the side.
The Wattle is crocheted into the basket
The beak is crocheted separately, then sewn into the basket.
The chain at the beginning of each round does not count as a stitch, unless noted.
A comma (,) indicates to work in next stitch.
Instructions
Basket
Begin & Rnd 1: With super bulky weight yarn and 6.5mm hook, CH10. SCINC in 2nd CH from hook, SC x7 across, 4SC in last CH. SCINC in first CH from hook on opposite side of foundation CH, SC x7, SCINC in last CH, SL ST in first ST to join (22 STS).
Rnd 2: CH1 (does not count as a ST) then SCINC in same ST as CH1. SCINC x2 - image B.1, SC x5 across, SCINC6, SC x5, SCINC x3, SL ST in first ST (34 STS).
Rnd 3: CH1 then SCINC in same ST as CH1. *(SC, SCINC) x3*, SC x3, **(SCINC, SC) x3**, SCINC x2, repeat from * to *, SC x3, repeat from ** to **, then SCINC in last ST of rnd. SL ST in FLO of first ST to join (50 STS).
Rnd 4: CH1, SC in FLO of same ST. In FLO, SC around, SL ST in first ST (50 STS).
Rnd 5: SC around (50 STS).
Rnd 6: Repeat rnd 5. Then fasten off and weave ends. Place your stitch marker or safety pin in the first ST of rnd 6 (50 STS).
Wattle
Take your red yarn (or color used for the “wattle”) and work a slip knot.
Beginning with first ST of rnd 5, count around 13 STS towards the top half of basket (or until you reach the 2nd to the centermost ST of top half of basket). Insert your 4.5mm hook into the BLO of the corresponding ST and CH3 SC in the 2nd CH from hook, SL ST, SL ST in BLO of next ST.
CH4, SC in 2nd CH from hook SL ST x2, SL ST in BLO of next ST.
CH3, SC in 2nd CH from hook, SL ST, SL ST in same ST as CH3. FO and weave ends. Wattle complete.
Beak
Take your orange yarn (or color used for the “beak”) and work a slip knot with the 4.5mm hook and CH4.
Turn CH so that the back humps are facing up and insert hook into the back hump of 2nd CH from hook to work a SC.
Working in the back humps of foundation CH, HDC, DC across. FO leaving a short strand for sewing.
Assembly & Finish
Place beak in the center of bottom half of basket, making sure it lines up with the “wattle.”
Remove the stitch marker (or safety pin) from the first ST and use it to hold the beak in place as you are sewing it on.
Thread yarn tail of beak into needle and sew beak to over the corresponding STS of rnd 5 (so that it covers the STS).
Thread black yarn onto needle and embroider eyes in rnd 1 around 7 STS apart (making sure they are even on each side).
Weave in any loose ends and your basket is ready to use!
