This page has been revised to include a full video tutorial for how to work the Button Cross Towel Holder! Scroll to the bottom to find the video. This pattern uses the a combination of the modified cross half double crochet stitch (MCHDC) and single crochet (SC); This produces a beautiful chevron look with a dense finish and minimal stretch. I prefer to use Bernat Maker for this pattern but any medium weight #4 cotton yarn would work (finished look will differ):

How to work the Modified Cross Half Double Crochet (MCHDC)
Note: A typical cross half double crochet is worked in a skipped ST. However, the MCHDC is worked in the 3rd loop of same ST as the 2nd to last ST made:
Working in the same ST as 2nd to last ST made, YO, insert hook into the 3rd loop - image 2.1 (make sure hook comes through the 3rd loop on opposite side of ST - image 2.2 - this produces the chevron finish).
YO, pull up loop to same height as current row - image 2.3
3. YO, pull through all loops. MCHDC complete - image 2.4.
4. The MCHDC produces the chevron finish on both sides of fabric - image 2.5.
